The Amazons and Alexander the Great

Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Napoli

For the last time in history we encounter the Amazons in connection with Alexander the Great. And this time the story doesn't tell about blood and thunder but of love!

This time our reporter is Diodorus Siculus:

When Alexander returned to Hyrcania, to him came the queen of the Amazons named Thalestris, governing the countries between the rivers Phasis and Thermodon. She was of astounding beauty and physical strength and was admired by her compatriotes for her prowess. She had left most of her forces at the border to Hyrcania and appeared, accompanied by 300 Amazons in full armour.

(If we believe in the existence of Thallestris and her Amazons and that they had heard of Alexander, it seems not to be to much effort, that they traveled from Thermodon on the Black Sea passing the valleys of the rivers Phasis and Carus and along the Caspian Sea. They than would have crossed the then subjugated country of the Mardi and met Alexander at Hyrcania.)

He had proven himself by his achievements as an outstanding man and she superated all women in strength and prowess, therefore it was fair to assume that the offspring of so paramount a pair of parents would exceed all mortals in greatness. That pleased the king and he gave in to her wish and he attended to her for thirteen days. After that he honoured her with beautiful presents and sent her home.

Regrettably, the hoped for success of this encounter did not materialize. Thalestris died shortly after in a struggle against neigbouring tribes.
